REVIEW

"Fast-Paced Romance with a Dash of Suspense"

Nate Murdock is ornithologist on a mission. He's starting a six-week project studying Peregrine Falcons in California; he hopes to find the reason behind the sudden drop in the Peregrine population in the area. The photographer he found at the last minute has excellent references, and Murdock is looking forward to spending a few weeks in the wilds of the Trinity Alps with the man.

There's just one problem -- Andy Peterson isn't a man. Andy (short for Andrea) is a gorgeous, spirited, and very talented young woman. She's the total opposite of everything Murdock expected.

Their attraction is immediate, though Andy is fighting her own demons and Nate is more than a little reluctant to embark on a relationship in the middle of nowhere. Add to that the perplexing mystery of the disappearance of the Falcons, and you have all the makings of an excellent romantic suspense novel.

ON WINGS OF LOVE is a fast-paced book that alternates between pulse-pounding excitement and deep emotional exploration. Douglas' skill with characterization is present en force -- both Nate and Andy are fully fleshed characters who draw you easily into their world. Their relationship grows as they combat the evil menace that threatens the magnificent birds that they both love, though a lot of the conflict comes from the heroine's own insecurities and the fact that the hero stumbles into them frequently. It's nice to see her overcoming her problems without leaning on the hero too much, though it did leave the hero a little too "modern" for this reviewer's taste. The book also ended very quickly, with the resolution falling almost too fast to be completely satisfying. Douglas' fans will be pleased to find another offering from the talented writer, but those who want to sample her real expertise would be advised to start with one of her other titles.

Sensuality Level: Typical romance novel sensuality. Scenes are explicit, but terminology is generally soft.

Summary

Photographer Andy Petersen's dream assignment assisting noted ornithologist Nathan Murdock quickly becomes a nightmare. Professor Murdock is expecting the senior Mr. Petersen at his remote mountain camp, not the absolutely gorgeous--and irritating--Ms. Petersen. Sparks--and feathers--fly as Nate and Andy are forced to deal with each other, a group of murderous smugglers, and the preservation of an eyrie of magnificent but threatened peregrine falcons. The question is: can two avowed 'control freaks' find love and common ground amid the cliffs and caverns of northern California's beautiful Trinity Alps? Also available in trade paperback (ISBN 0-7599-0124-4).
