REVIEW

""Blowin' in the wind" takes on a whole new meaning with a sexy wind spirit."

Drey comes from a family of female mages in their early- medieval world. However, she feels that she has less magic than any of her relatives. She can't control the weather or improve the crops; she can't even light a candle by magic. She does have healing skills, but it is mainly herbal knowledge and common sense. Her grandmother has told her that each mage has to find her own magic and learn on her own; it's not something she can be taught by others. So Drey resides in a small village where she is the healer for the local people, as she struggles to learn basic mage skills.

When wandering in the mountain, Drey finds a magic circle and joyously celebrates with no intent to actually perform magic -- but accidentally summons a wind spirit into human form. But because she doesn't know how she did it, she can't change 'Cyrus' back! She has to find a way to learn more than her small magic. When she hears that Kelsh, a powerful and wealthy mage, has moved into the valley, she offers to be his apprentice and pay him not in coin, but "anything you wish". Drey gets a whole new view of magic and of learning, and she acquires more knowledge than Kelsh is aware of. She begins to worry about what he will ask as payment, and what his real reason for training her may be. And if she does figure out how to send Cyrus back, will she want to, now that she realizes how much she loves him?

I found this an enjoyable and involving story, with well- developed characters and a good plotline. I really felt for Drey and Cyrus, torn between their love for each other and Cyrus's unhappy entrapment in human form. There were some moving and sizzling intimate scenes -- including very creative ones when Cyrus is in wind elemental form! The author's previous book, FIRE & ICE, was set in the same 'world'. I enjoy seeing how an author improves her skills with experience; SMALL MAGICK makes me look forward to the next book in the series. (Per the author, TIDAL TREASURES will be about a sea spirit and is slated for release in October 2003 from LTDBooks.)

Summary

Drey comes from a long line of powerful mages. She laments that she has naught but small magick related to healing. Her life changes the day she discovers a magical circle near her cottage. For the first time, she concentrates on celebration and not her goal—and somehow manages to summon a wind spirit in a very appealing male form. Cyrus believes Drey has bound him to pleasure her, and devotes himself to the task. The sensual experiences offered by his mortal body delight him, as does his beguiling mage. For a time, he is content to discover the mortal world and all it has to offer. As lust leads to love, one problem remains—Drey has no idea how to reverse the spell she unknowingly wrought. Cryus is trapped in her world. To free him, she is willing to do anything, even apprentice herself to an unknown mage with an agenda of his own.
