"Human empath and sexy alien cat-man"

Mara is an Empath, a girl with telepathic senses. Her father started an educational institute for humans with these talents. He wanted to study the brain and all its wonders.

Marla's life took a turn when her father died. She is convinced he was murdered but had no proof. One evening while sleeping, Mara had a telepathic visit from an alien who was orbiting earth. Sander is an explorer from another planet and communicates telepathically. Mara experienced this visit nightly for months before the actual contact. The feelings she had for this unknown were very strong and just from the alien's mindtouch. She hoped to know him physically and soon.

The World Federation is not in favor of the Armand Institute's existence nor does it tolerate the existence of aliens. This leads to further concerns and war-like excitement in Mara's life. She has some big decisions to make what with the crash-landing of the alien's spaceship, her trying to protect him from the Federation as well as the Institute.

This all makes for a good read and I am now anxious to read the follow-up book, NIGHT OF THE CAT.

Summary

Mara Armand, director of a foundation for the protection and study of humans with extrasensory abilities, has made telepathic contact with an alien starship captain orbiting the earth.

After weeks of nightly telepathic visits with Captain Sander, Mara develops an intimate mental relationship with her unseen alien lover. She experiences his need, his passion, and his sensual touch, but it is a bittersweet relationship for the laws of the Explorers forbid them to ever meet.

An accident in space changes everything and Mara and Sander are given the chance they never thought they'd have. Threatened by World Federation troops from without and jealous hatred from within, their survival now depends on the strength of their bond and a ragtag army of young Sensitives willing to risk their lives for an alien starship captain.
