REVIEW

"Captured by pirates!"

Written for Sensual Romance by A. Black

Lady Lissa Stilton is aboard her father's ship with her cousin and maid when the ship is boarded by pirates and they are taken as prisoners. Her cousin suggests that the maid switch clothing with Lissa to avoid revealing Lissa's identity. The ploy backfires when the Captain, Black Jack recognizes Lissa.

Lord John Fitzpatrick, aka the infamous pirate Black Jack, finds the life of a English Lord boring, so he masquerades as a pirate captain, capturing and plundering ships with the best cargo. In London he found himself on the verge of falling in love with Lissa, so he left at the height of the season to avoid a commitment. But when he captures Lissa's father's ship, and discovers Lissa is aboard, he acts quickly to conceal his identity and save Lissa's virtue -- from the crew, that is. Lord Fitzpatrick has no qualms about enjoying Lissa's charms while they are at sea, and not restricted by London society rules. He claims her as his booty but he must treat her like any other pirate would. Although his goal is to keep his men's respect, will he lose Lissa's respect and her love?

This is not a poorly written story, but I did not enjoy it. I found the characters boring and two-dimensional, and most of the hero's and heroine's motivations were not believable. For example, John doesn't want his men to know who Lissa is, so he claims and then rapes (in my opinion) her in his cabin. He tells her, "Before long you will be spreading these sweet white thighs eagerly for my cock." Sure enough, shortly thereafter she submits willingly. This is not the behavior of a gently raised woman who has just been captured by pirates -- regardless of the time period. John is not my idea of a hero, and Lissa is not a strong, smart, sassy heroine. Prehaps other readers will disagree.

Summary

A few dances together, and Lord John Fitzpatrick has captured Lissa's heart. Soon London gossip whispers that, possibly due to a lady's honor, he's disappeared. So do Lissa's dreams. Saddened from the recent loss of her mother, Lissa sets sail for her home in Caribbean. The trip is peaceful until a sailor shouts "Captain Jack!" The pirate was bearing down on them faster than they could outrun him. Lissa switches clothing with her maid. The ploy could have worked, but when Cap'n Jack sees the wench at his feet, he immediately knows he has a problem. Instead of a serving girl, his captive is Lady Lissa Stilton. Fear of commitment caused him to desert London at the height of the Season, and the source of his fear now lies at his feet.

What should be a simple capture, plunder and release is suddenly complicated beyond his wildest dreams. Cap'n Jack, alias Lord John Fitzpatrick, captured a Stilton ship on purpose—those ships always carry the best goods to and from the Islands. Also, he knew Lord Peter Stilton's daughter was safe in London. Unsure of the right course, he takes Lissa as his captive...and his lover. After months at sea, her father finds them and orders Lissa on board his ship. The real adventure begins as they return to life in London and discover as much about their own self as they do each other. Just when Jack is sure he knows what will happen, Lissa turns his world upside down one more time.

Sexual Content: Rated S-ensuous
