REVIEW

"Story of lost love regained"

A story of lost love regained, Choices is a slow read. Laura left Mitch, the love of her life, without ever telling him why. Now, 16 years later, a chance meeting reunites them. Can they rekindle a love that never died? Did I really care by the end of the book?

The heroine starts out as a strong, self made woman; she steadily lost my sympathy as the story progressed. Laura is slowly revealed to be emotionally stunted and trapped by actions she took at age 18. It seemed that her self image, hard won through self-improvement and therapy, was a lie. Her relationships continually suffer because she can't let go of the past, and subconsciously she blames Mitch. She had loved him to distraction and wanted to marry. He felt that he needed to finish school and get a good job before they wed. In what comes across as a childish tantrum, she leaves town and severs all contact with friends. Only her father knows where she is, and she's forbidden him from telling Mitch. She winds up in a bad rebound marriage to a controlling jerk, and has a little girl.

Kept from seeking a divorce out of fear of losing her daughter, she hangs on until fate makes her a widow. She is now, after much therapy and education, a successful romance writer and single mother.

Mitch has moved on in his life after the devastating broken heart he suffered at Laura's hands. As her reasons for leaving him are slowly revealed, I kept wondering what he saw in her. He still loves Laura and wants to marry her and adopt her 15-year-old daughter. Laura at first can't forgive him for not marrying her to start with, then can't bring herself to trust her feelings or Mitch. By the end of the story, he began to seem like a doormat.

The story tries to show that his love for her can overcome her resistance. Unfortunately, it reads more like a co- dependant cry for more abuse. By the end of the story, I found it difficult to believe that neither of these people had grown up at all, why he was still putting up with her, or that they wouldn't eventually end in divorce. I'd pass on this one.
