REVIEW

"Sensitively written deaf romantic heroine"

Cleveland Police detective Russ Evans is trying to bring down con man Trevor Dean, who victimizes unsuspecting women by befriending them before emptying their bank accounts. Laurel Wilkins is Dean's latest target, by way of intimate Internet chats leading to a coffee shop meeting that he fails to show up for. Russ wanders into the coffee shop to try to see what is going on. When Laurel mistakes him for Trevor Dean, imagine his surprise when she calls him by his own name. It turns out that Dean has been using the name and identity of Russ Evans in his Internet chats with Laurel. Laurel, who is deaf, explains to Russ that she only became involved with Trevor Dean because she wanted some excitement in her life, hopefully in the form of an intense sexual affair.

Russ and Laurel begin working together to set up and catch Trevor Dean which gives them the perfect opportunity for a hot affair. It turns out that Dean has a violent side and when Laurel's safety is compromised, Russ finds himself experiencing feelings for Laurel that he has always denied being capable of. Casual sex was more his style and he could not believe that a sweet, naive girl like Laurel could knock him so off-kilter.

Erin McCarthy has done a fabulous job in writing Laurel and Russ in this book. Her descriptions of life in Laurel's deaf world as well as many of the obstacles faced by the deaf are very sensitively written and show incredible attention to detail. Russ and Laurel are two of the sweetest, most likable characters that I have read in a very long time. Secondary characters in the form of a concerned mother, a teenage brother, and two best friends who throw sparks of their own, are an added bonus in this book. Don't let the sweetness fool you, love scenes between Russ and Laurel pack a powerful punch with an abundance of hot sex.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an excellently written book with lovable characters all the way around.
