REVIEW

"Modern-day Peter Pan fable"

Wendy Thompson has a fiancé she isn't madly in love with and a wedding to plan (with help from an overbearing mother- in-law-to-be). But when she hears of the death of a childhood neighbor, she puts it all aside to attend the funeral. Jeffrey Hook, her fiancé, is annoyed at her insistence on this unplanned trip and refuses to accompany her. He's a lawyer with a big case coming up. She's determined to go. The woman was the mother of her best friend in childhood, Peter, who shared her taste for adventurous games and wild adventures.

Because of the short notice, poor Wendy can't get a direct flight, and ends up on a crowded plane -- with a strange man sitting in the seat she was assigned. The fact that he's a blond hunk doesn't impress her; all she wants is her seat. The stewardess isn't very helpful until the seat cheat asks if there's space in first class, and while she goes to check, the hunk asks Wendy "Have you learned to fly?"

It is her old friend, now the owner of Neverland Airways, also on his way home for his mother's funeral. Can these two long lost pals find each other again -- and can they find the dream of always staying young within each other's arms?

Pete Pan is one of my favorite books; I love the story and its premise. This book was a disappointment to me. It is billed as a contemporary Peter Pan story, but other than the names of major characters, it has little to do with Barrie's book. Instead, it's the story of two people who were meant for each there, but who got off track due to twists of fate. A second twist of fate brings them together to reclaim the joy that should have been theirs. A light, pleasant read with likable characters, deft love scenes, decent dialogue, and nothing particularly memorable about it. Someday I'd like to see someone to do a grown-up Peter Pan romance that actually works; this isn't it.

Summary

Peter taught Wendy how to fly. As children, they shared first love, magic, and adventure until the day he was forced to leave. Reunited almost twenty years later, their feelings for each other flared to life once more. But was it enough? These days Wendy kept her feet firmly planted on the ground, while Peter continued to reach for the sky. Could they meet somewhere in between, and find their happily ever after?
