The story is told partly in flashbacks to twenty-five years ago, 2225. It begins when Nicoletta Apollinaris is bought on the marriage mart by a wealthy member of the Hierarchy, Abdul Kan. She is the second wife for Abdul and they have a few short months of happiness before Abdul begins to change, to withdraw. The next twenty-five years are hard on Nicoletta, but she endures until she finally escapes.

Six months later, her husband has died. So she's returning to Federated Earth, to see her daughter and await the birth of her grandchild. When the transport is hijacked, Nicoletta finds herself once again at the mercy of brutal men. Rescued by a sub-human, Nicoletta isn't sure if she should be relieved or not. After all, this monster could tear her to bits. But he doesn't. Why?

There's more to the situation than meets the eye, but I won't spoil it for you. Needless to say, I was happy at the way the ending turned out. Surprisingly, I didn't have too much trouble following the story, despite my not having read the three previous novellas in the Death Row series. Of course, readers should first peruse the rest of Ms. Black's Death Row stories to get the most enjoyment out of Death Row: The Mastering.
