REVIEW

"Realistic look at life in the 1870s"

Buffalo Lachlan almost wished he hadn't made that promise to Anders, but there was no way he could say 'no' when his friend was dying. The latest lead brought him here, to Astoria, Oregon. Anders' twin sister was kidnapped when the family was vacationing at the beach. It's been fourteen years since she was taken by the slavers. If at all possible, Buff will find her.

Siri has been trying to find any word on her children. After her husband was killed in a fishing accident, her mother-in-law forced her to find work. Eventually, she disappeared, along with Siri's children. Siri hasn't had any luck in finding them so far. Eventually, a mutual acquaintance of them both agrees to help Buff with his quest if Buff will agree to help Siri find her children.

Buff and Siri are attracted to each other, but Siri's husband was not exactly a gentle man and she is afraid of sex. They also don't realize that someone is following them as they begin their search.

This story is a very realistic look at the life of a poor woman in the 1870's. There weren't many options available to a woman back then and it's amazing how Siri managed as well as she did. We get to ride along with Buff and Siri as they face danger of every kind, from man as well as nature, to find the answers of each of their quests. We also get to learn of the prejudice facing immigrants from Europe and China. This is a realistic look at the time period and all the dangers that the pioneers faced. If this is a subject that you have any interest in at all, you definitely don't want to miss this book.

Summary

Book VI of the Behind the Ranges Series: Buffalo Lachlan promised a dying man he'd find a lost twin, and he's been following nebulous clues and vague rumors halfway around the world ever since. His search leads him to Astoria, Oregon, the cold, rainy winter of 1873.

In all his wanderings, he has only once before seen eyes winter-sky blue like Siri Trogen's. Could she be the lost sister, heiress to a barony? Before Buff can find proof, he becomes caught up in her hunt for her stolen children. Inexplicable accidents and unexplained disasters complicate their efforts. Is someone trying to prevent Siri from finding her children, or him from finding the missing heiress?

Shared danger drives them into each other's arms. Shared adventure teaches them that they each have a streak of recklessness, a core of courage, and a heart full of love to share. But before they can make any decisions about the future, they have to find Siri's children, prove she's the lost baroness...and stay alive.
