"An Erotic Journey Through Time and Memory"
Mercy Ward is watching her twin brother die when the
memories first return. It is 1785, and she is Mistress
Baines. Her husband's death has left her the owner of a
printing shop -- and the mistress of the two indentured
servants that the man had kept at the shop. Though years
younger than she is, James Herrick is suddenly hers to
command -- and he's all too willing to do what he can for
her. But times are dark and secrets abound. As modern-day
Mercy Ward tries to sort out the memories that are
engulfing her, can she find love again? HIS MISTRESS is a hot but ultimately unfulfilling story.
The historical details add to the charm of it, but the
overall sense is one of confusion. Time jumps forward and
back make it difficult to follow the romantic threads, and
the brevity of the novel doesn't help the comprehension of
the story. Harte introduces many heroes, but doesn't give
the reader enough time to really become attached to any of
them. Mercy's memories are vivid and exciting and the dual
events work well in a logical sense. Technically speaking,
the story is interesting and unique, but as a romance
story, it simply doesn't come together well. Readers who
enjoy Harte's voice and who will forgive even a stuttering
story for good enough sexual content will probably enjoy
the tale, but if you're simply looking for a good read,
then perhaps HIS MISTRESS should get a pass. Sensuality Level: This title has been rated NC-17 by the
publisher.
