REVIEW

"Psychic vampires need human sexual energy."

Nothing seems to be going right for Rachel Marks. After several years as a bookstore owner, she is forced out of business when a large shopping mall opens near her store. Although she has enough money saved to maintain her lifestyle for a few months, she's in debt and in need of a job immediately. When she has no luck finding employment she decides to take temporary work as a cocktail waitress at Mystique, a gothic-themed nightclub.

Devon Carnavorn owns Mystique and is immediately attracted to Rachel, and decides to make her his. After her first night of work he promotes her to a supervisory role and triples her salary to ensure she stays at the club. Although Rachel is a hard worker and has supervisory experience, she's surprised and suspicious about Devon's intention.

Rachel accepts the position and soon becomes Devon's lover in every way but intercourse. Why? Because Devon is a member of a clan of psychic vampires who need human sexual energy to sustain their existence. If he consummates their relationship too soon the results could be deadly for Rachel. He wants her to become one of the clan and spend eternity with him as a mate. Because the transformation process is painful and the results permanent, she must first agree to the offer.

Jeya Jenson did a good job developing the heroine. However, the other characters -- including the hero -- were not as well developed and multidimensional. I never really got a sense of who they were. It was also hard for me to like Rachel for several reasons. I thought she was crude for calling her cat an asshole when she couldn't find him. I thought she was weak and selfish because of the way she treated the boyfriend she didn't want. She used him for a companion because she had no one else and was waiting for "something better to come along." She wanted to break it off with him but she was too afraid of being alone.

Jeya Jenson is a good writer and has developed a good story. If you're a diehard vampire fan you may enjoy this book.
