"Will he believe she's the victim, or think she's a murderer?"

Kristine "Krist" Matthews had fallen in love with Dylan Mitchell from his picture when she was 17 years old and a friend of his sister. Now Krist is a writer developing a new mystery series, and wanted police chief Dylan's input as a veteran cop. Dylan thought that Krist was a little rich girl who didn't need to work and tried very hard to dislike her; he thought that the 14 year age difference between them and the difference in their incomes was too much. Krist finally wore him down and he agreed to work with her on her book. She also convinced him that they should act on the intense sexual attraction between them.

Krist had a painful secret from her past and while Dylan didn't know what it was, or that someone was blackmailing Krist, he knew that something just wasn't right. Krist refused to talk to him about it. Dylan's beautiful ex-wife and the much younger Krist were very jealous of each other; both wanted to be the only woman in his life. It turns out that the man blackmailing Krist is also blackmailing Dylan's ex-wife as well as another woman. Very late one night Krist receives a phone call from the blackmailer, asking her to meet him at his home. When she arrives she finds him dead and sees Dylan's ex-wife leaving the scene. Dylan walked in to find Krist standing over the body and believes that she murdered him, despite her pleas of innocence. Eventually she explains her past and the blackmail and Dylan believes her and they set out to find the murderer, with lots of hot sex along their way. Can Dylan find the murderer before Krist becomes the next target? Can Krist convince Dylan that her love for him is true and Dylan give in to his own true feelings?

I found these characters to be a little irritating; their arguments frequently seemed very childish and were sometimes grating. However, the mystery of the killer's identity showed great imagination and I would never have guessed who it was. Overall, this was an enjoyable read and I do plan to read more from Ms. Lee in the future.

Summary

The last thing Dylan Mitchell wanted was an affair with a woman fourteen years his junior who already had more money than he could hope to earn in a lifetime as a police chief. Yet the moment he meets aspiring writer, Kristine Matthews, his life is turned upside down. Despite himself, he's furious and defensive one moment and tender and horny the next.

After they become lovers, the town's blackmailing gigolo is murdered and Kristen is found at the scene. Unwilling to believe that the woman who fulfills all his erotic fantasies is a cold-blooded killer, Dylan sets out to prove her innocence. To do that he'll have to get Kristine to admit to her past before someone else--Kristine is murdered.
