"Falling in love with a bed!"
Blaine Saunders has fallen in love -- with a unique antique
brass bed. Buying it turns out to be the easiest part --
actually getting possession of it is tricky. The delivery
company takes it to the wrong apartment, and then refuses
to retrieve it and redeliver it unless Blaine pays them for
the extra work. So Blaine decides she can handle this on
her own -- she's always been a tomboy, is good with tools,
she's sure she can dismantle the bed, lug it into a
borrowed truck, and get it safely home. When she arrives at
the apartment it was delivered to, she finds out from a
neighbor that the resident is away on a lengthy business
trip. But after explanations, the woman is willing to let
her into the apartment. So Blaine goes to work, although
seriously hampered by the allergy medication she's taking.
Hmm, how many pills has she taken so far today? Boy, she's
feeling very sleepy, maybe a quick nap on the bed before
she dismantles it would be okay. Donovan Roy arrives home in the middle of the night, to the
barren apartment he spends little time in because he
travels so much, trying to earn as much money as he can to
support his mother and the family farm after his late
father's financial irresponsibility left them in heavy
debt. Something seems different when he stumbles through
the dark bedroom and collapses in bed, but he's too
exhausted to care. When he awakens later in the night with
a warm and cuddly woman in his arms, his body knows what to
do even if his mind isn't quite alert yet! The "morning after" is embarrassing for both Blaine and
Donovan, but they get through it by focusing on practical
matters like getting the bed redelivered to Blaine's home.
However, the second attempt goes even farther off target
than the first, and the two have to join forces to track
down the wandering furniture. There is quite a comedy of
errors as they check out the places it could have ended up,
try to get straight answers from the trucking company, and
deal with Blaine's sister's upcoming wedding and her
father's heavy-handed attempts at matchmaking. This was an enjoyable light read. The humor is balanced a
bit by the financial struggles and worries of both Blaine
and Donovan. The story action flows fast and keeps the
reader interested, and the little revelations about the
history of "the bed" are entertaining.
